I'm on a journey to read through the Bible in chronological order. Taking it one day at a time, I will read based on a list I found on the internet and blog about what happened, thoughts provoked, emotions conjured, etc. Enjoy!

Day 145: Psalms 111-118

If you just read the Psalms, it would be easy to conclude that if you love and follow the Lord, good things will always happen to you. From reading the rest of the Bible, and examining your own life, you've probably figured out that this isn't the case at all. Good things don't always happen... the bad always comes in with the good. What gives us hope is from the other passages in the Bible that explain that bad things happen in order to test and refine us in our faith. If we always had good things, I seriously doubt that many of us would actually take a moment to examine our lives and our trust in God. It's easy to trust when things are good...but God wants us all the time, through the good and bad.

For me, the Psalms gives hope of a new future. While on earth we endure trials and hardships, there is a promise for the saints who persevere. That is what keeps me going--the promise of things to come. I think to put the Psalms into full context, you must think beyond the here and now and focus on what is to come--God will not let the righteous fall on the day of judgment.

116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD
is the death of his saints.

  1. Beth Moore stated in one of her biblestudies that God uses tough circumstances to change us...or something along those lines. That goes perfectly with what you are saying...that tough times should move us closer to Him. Mold us into someone closer to Christ, abiding more in Him. We couldn't do that by staying where we are. Tough times will come, but Christ can give us peace in a raging storm.
