The Levites are given their plots of land and are assigned several "Cities of Refuge". These cities are designed to keep an accidental murderer safe from anyone who may seek vengeance. He must stay in the city until the High Priest dies. If he leaves before then, he is open to attack and can be freely murdered. It seems that the Levites have again been placed in a position of trust. Just as they were trusted to take care of the Tabernacle and its contents, they are also in charge of keeping these cities safe and fortified. There is also an understanding that they will also not try to kill anyone who seeks refuge in their walls but will protect them at all costs. Seems like a pretty big responsibility!
The last portion of Numbers explains that daughters must marry within their tribe to avoid inheritances crossing tribal lines. Granted, the tribes were HUGE, but it seems a bit incestuous to me.
And so Numbers comes to an end. From what I can see, Deuteronomy is simply a continuation of this whole narrative so I'm looking forward to see what all comes of it.
Thank you to everyone who prayed and expressed concern for my family over the last few days. Aunt Luella's service was just perfect and it was great getting to spend some time with our family during that time. We are just so blessed and happy to know that she is dancing in Heaven with the two loves of her life--Uncle Jack and her Savior!
