A very important fact is offered to the people: the things God is asking is not out of their reach. It should be written on their hearts and He will never ask them to do something He doesn't think they can handle. By choosing God, they are choosing life...seems like a pretty simple decision to me.
Moses and God then commission Joshua to take Moses' place and take the people over Jordan into Canaan. Joshua is given a great little pep-talk by Moses reminding him that God is crossing over Jordan before him and preparing a way--he just has to trust and follow it. How cool is that?
So even after all of this reminding and making sure the Israelites have the Law blasting in their faces 24/7, God tells Moses in confidence that He knows they people will go astray pretty much as soon as they enter Canaan. They will begin enjoying their new cushy life and turn to other gods. I am again left bewildered and confused--God knows all this is going to happen and yet goes through the entire previous 40 years and proceeds with letting them enter the Promised Land... Its like the Israelites are pawns in God's ultimate end game...just so confusing.
God gives Moses a song that he is to teach the people so that they will sing it and never forget where they have come from and where they will go. He writes it down and it is placed in the Ark and kept by the Levites...the song is told in the next reading so to be continued!
